The mission of AAOMS is to contribute to the public welfare by advancement of the profession of dentistry and in particular the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery; to foster programs of education, research, standards of practice and scientific investigation in the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery; to provide a means of self-government relating to professional standards, ethical behavior and responsibilities of its fellows and members; and to provide opportunities for social and professional development.

  • <p>This four-hour anesthesia workshop for oral and maxillofacial surgery assistants allows for hands-on clinical training in assisting OMSs with the administration of anesthesia. Participants will rotate through multiple stations to include airway management; intubation; venipuncture; defibrillation; preparation of emergency drugs; and mini-code. Furthermore, registrants will be exposed to various airway adjuncts, critical cardiac dysrhythmias and defibrillation, and the use of the peak flow meter and glucometer. The course was been developed and is taught by members of the AAOMS Committee on Practice Management and Professional Allied Staff. Four hours of continuing education credit is provided.<br></p>

  • <p></p><p>The AAOMS Anesthesia Assistants Review Course is a continuing education course for clinical staff to improve their anesthesia knowledge and skills. Participants will benefit from this intensive review course which focuses on principles of anesthesia learned through structured training, as well as discussion of the latest innovations and methods of anesthesia administration, monitoring, and emergency management.</p><p>Taught by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, this comprehensive review course will include basic sciences, patient evaluation and preparation, anesthetic drugs and techniques, monitoring, and emergency procedures.</p><p>The Anesthesia Assistants Review Course is open to all members of dental anesthesia assisting teams. After completing the course, participants will be better prepared to assist in the administration of sedation and/or general anesthesia and patient monitoring in the office. The AARC also helps assistants prepare for the Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination (DAANCE).</p><p></p>

Both days are necessary to achieve the maximum benefits this course has to offer. AAOMS encourages oral and maxillofacial surgeons to attend with their allied staff team. Participants must have a basic understanding of CDT, CPT, and ICD-10-CM. Basic coding knowledge or completion of the AAOMS Basic Coding course and AAOMS ICD-10-CM course is suggested before participating in this intermediate leve workshop. Bring your CPT, CDT, and ICD-10-CM coding books. This is a hands-on workshop and books are not sold on site.</p><p><b>At the conclusion of this workshop participants should be able to:</b></p><p></p><ul><li>Explain key healthcare reimbursement issues, the Correct Coding Initiative (CCI), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), an overview of health reform and fraud and abuse;<br></li><li>Achieve compliance through appropriate documentation for services provided (eg, use of E/M guidelines);<br></li><li>Follow guidelines for coding anesthesia, applying associated modifiers and other coding trends;<br></li><li>Analyze clinical case studies to code OMS-specific procedures such as fractures and biopsies;<br></li><li>Describe the relationship of coding to third-party reimbursement;<br></li><li>Understand managed care contracting and how to conduct/respond to a health plan audit;<br></li><li>Gain an understanding of state insurance laws such as prompt payment and degree of provider; and<br></li><li>Understand insurance exchange products, embedded dental plans, and quality improvement programs.<br></li></ul><p></p><br><p></p>
